Sherwood Forest Browse around the Visitor Centre shops or relax after a stroll in the Forest Table Restaurant. Take a walk to the mighty Major Oak, pick up one of our fun family nature trails, or just stand and admire the weird and wonderful shapes of the ancient oak trees, twisted by age and weathered into living sculptures. Take time out to appreciate the unique ecology of Sherwood. The natural decay of fallen wood means the woodland teems with insect life, fungi, birds and bats. In partnership with the Sherwood Forest Trust, we currently have a woodland grazing project at Sherwood, with Hebridean sheep and Dexter cattle helping ensure that open areas of medieval heathland do not revert to scrub.   Click here for more information

Newstead Abbey Newstead Abbey, a beautiful historic house set in a glorious landscape of gardens and parkland within the heart of Nottinghamshire, England. Founded as a monastic house in the late twelfth century, Newstead became the seat of the Byron family in 1540. Sir John Byron and his successors kept much of the monastic structure and layout so that, to this day, the house retains its medieval character. The most famous survival is the west front of the church, which dates from the late 13th century, with its statue of St Mary, to whom the priory was dedicated The Abbey's most famous owner, the poet Lord Byron, sold the property in 1818 to his friend Colonel Thomas Wildman. Newstead Abbey remained a private country house until 1931, when it was presented to the Nottingham Corporation for the public to enjoy.   Click here for more information
